The meeting will be held in the Frederick Municipal Annex at 140 W. Patrick St.  (NOTE:  Meeting location is in Municipal Annex, NOT City Hall)

It will be televised on local channel 99 and available for later viewing online via the City of Frederick website.

Jack Markey, Director of Emergency Preparedness, Frederick County;

Dr. Barbara Brookmyer, Frederick County Health Officer

Representatives from:

Frederick Memorial Hospital; Health Department; Fire and Rescue and Fort Detrick

We will be talking about communication and emergency response if there is an accident or event at the labs:

What’s the plan and who’s in charge?

Who notifies the public and how?  How will people know what to do?

What kinds of emergencies are being prepared for?

How are biohazards handled?

Where would people be treated?

The public is urged to attend and bring questions or concerns.

Monday, April 11th 7-9pm IMAGINE! Frederick film:A Community of Gardeners released just last month at the Washington DC Environmental Film Festival, focuses on the people who grow fruits, vegetables and flowers at seven community gardens in Washington, D.C. and shows how these green spaces are changing their lives, their communities and their environment. The Containment Laboratory Community Advisory Comittee wants to know what’s on people’s minds about the labs.  Find out more about the committee, its purpose and scope, and about the labs here..  Sign up to be notified about the monthly public meetings, forums and other oportunities to participate. Charles Marohn (Chuck) is a Professional Engineer (PE) licensed in the State of Minnesota and a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). He has a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology and a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute.

Frederick County Sustainability Commission (Winchester Hall, 3rd floor meeting room 4-4:45): Mr. Marohn will look at the four Mechanisms of Growth we’ve utilized since WW II, the tradeoffs those create for cities and towns, and why they are all waning.  He will give a preview of what this means for local communities.

Green Drinks (Quinn’s Attic 5:30-6):  Mr. Marohn will review the Ponzi scheme aspects of our current development pattern and the assumptions behind the American model of “growth”. This will be related to why we are having such financial troubles in our towns and neighborhoods.

Curbside Chat (Bernard Browning Community Center, 629 N Market St, downtown Frederick  7-9pm): Mr. Marohn will briefly review the Mechanisms of Growth and how the current financial and housing crisis impact local communities. Then we are going to start a conversation about some of the “dead ideas” we need to let go of and present a collection of strategies for transforming the land use pattern to be more productive. 2010 Regional Working Lands Forum:  The Growing Local Challenge

Agricultural land is an integral part of our regional green infrastructure.  The 3,000 square mile Washington Metropolitan Area (WMA) is home to more than 3 million people with a population projected to grow to 4.5 million by 2030.  Given these population growth projections, there are significant challenges in meeting the growing demand for a secure, high quality local food supply.

Agricultural production and commerce continues to contribute over $1 billion annually to the local Washington economy. Given that growth projections will add an additional 2 million residents to the region in the next 25 years; can local agriculture continue to thrive and supply our region with quality local food?

The purpose of this forum is to both examine and discuss the role of agriculture in the rapidly growing WMA, as well as the opportunities that enable local agricultural producers and markets to flourish in this highly competitive landscape. Download pamphlet here.
